Do you wake up with a shiny T-zone but dry cheeks?

Or does your skin feel oily all day, no matter how much you wash it?

Many people struggle with uneven sebum production — that frustrating mix of oily forehead + flaky cheeks, or constant shine that makes makeup slide off.

In my 8+ years as a BAMS-certified Ayurvedic practitioner, I’ve seen this imbalance again and again — and Ayurveda offers a very gentle perspective.

This post shares traditional Ayurvedic-inspired practices and a simple homemade face oil recipe that many people use to support balanced, comfortable skin — without harsh chemicals or stripping cleansers.

Let’s explore how Ayurveda traditionally approaches sebum balance.

Ayurvedic View on Uneven Sebum

In Ayurveda, skin reflects the balance of the doshas and the quality of Agni (digestive fire) and Ojas (vital essence).

Understanding your dosha: Pitta (oily + inflamed), Vata (dry + flaky), Kapha (congested + enlarged pores)

Common patterns behind uneven sebum:

  1. High Pitta (fire + water) – excess oil + inflammation
    • Shiny T-zone, acne-prone areas
    • Redness, sensitivity, heat
    • Aggravated by spicy food, stress, hot weather
  2. High Vata (air + ether) – dryness + overproduction
    • Dry cheeks/forehead but oily nose
    • Flaky patches, rough texture
    • Aggravated by cold, wind, irregular routine
  3. High Kapha (water + earth) – heavy, sticky oil
    • Overall greasiness, large pores
    • Slow healing, blackheads
    • Aggravated by dairy, sweets, lack of movement

Most people have a Pitta-Vata or Pitta-Kapha mix:

Pitta pushes excess oil → Vata dries some areas → skin feels confused.

Modern habits that throw sebum off:

  • Over-cleansing (strips natural oils → rebound oiliness)
  • Harsh products (alcohol, sulfates)
  • Hot showers
  • Stress & poor sleep
  • Diet high in fried/spicy/sweet foods

Traditional approach:

Balance Pitta (cooling), calm Vata (moisturizing), lighten Kapha (non-clogging) — using gentle oils, herbs, and routines.

How to Make Ayurvedic Face Oil to Support Sebum Balance

This is a simple, customizable homemade face oil — many people use it daily to support comfortable, balanced skin.

Everything you need: carrier oils, Ayurvedic herb powders, and rose petals for your homemade face oil

Ingredients (makes ~30–50 ml)

Carrier oils (choose 2–3):

  • Jojoba oil – 20 ml (mimics skin’s sebum, non-comedogenic)
  • Sweet almond oil – 15 ml (nourishing, Vata-balancing)
  • Grapeseed oil – 10 ml (light, Kapha-friendly)

Herbs & actives (choose 2–3):

  • Brahmi powder – ½ tsp (cooling, calming)
  • Neem powder – ¼ tsp (traditional for Pitta balance)
  • Turmeric powder – pinch (anti-inflammatory)
  • Rose petals (dried) – 1 tsp (cooling, soothing)

Essential oils (optional, 3–5 drops total):

  • Lavender – calming
  • Tea tree – purifying (very small amount)
  • Geranium – balancing

Tools

  • Small glass bottle (dark amber preferred)
  • Double boiler or small pot + bowl

How to Make It

Gently warming carrier oils with Ayurvedic herbs using the double boiler method to create a nourishing face oil for balanced sebum.
  1. Warm carrier oils gently in double boiler (low heat, ~40–50°C)
  2. Add herbs/powders → stir 5 min
  3. Let infuse 1–2 hours (or overnight for stronger)
  4. Strain through cheesecloth/muslin
  5. Add essential oils if using
  6. Pour into dark bottle → store in cool place

How to Use

Apply 3-4 drops and massage gently upward for best absorption
  • After cleansing (evening best)
  • Warm 3–4 drops between palms
  • Massage gently upward on face & neck
  • Leave on overnight or 30 min then wipe excess

Nova’s Tip: Start with 2–3 nights per week. Notice how skin feels — adjust oils/herbs based on your dosha.
